March, 2019

No newsletter was published last month. No other unit, Aux., or Amvets submitted one. That, and Dan was unable to commit any time to do it. I am computer illiterate, so I don’t publish them.
There has not been a lot of news. We had a good steak fry in February that the post put on. Because of the weather we have not had real good Burger Nights, or Shrimp & Wings. They have almost been not worth doing. But we have a few people who depend on the meals. I don’t know why it is so hard to get members to volunteer a few hours a month to help with activities. It takes 5 people to do burgers, and 3 people to do shrimp and wings. All it is is 3-4 hours from start up to clean up. We need volunteers to help this VFW survive.
Our auxiliary organizations are supposed to support the post, not have a unit of their own. Everyone expects the post to pay for all of the upkeep. We recently had to put in a new heating and air conditioning unit on the roof. It cost the post $17,000 and we did not ask any other organization to help with the cost. Additionally, the post pays all of the utilities, all of the insurance, all of the upkeep such as snow plowing, lawn mowing, etc. We receive $300 a month, in total from the other organizations toward these expenses. I’m here to tell you that that $300 doesn’t scratch the surface, and we get grief even getting payment for the products that they use to keep the profits going in to THEIR checking account.
I’m sorry to get carried away, because we ARE a charity organization. It’s just that the recipients are supposed to be Veterans and not the auxiliaries.
We recently lost a lifetime in Roland Williams. Lloyd Fowler is in the Newaygo County Medical Care Facility. Lloyd would certainly appreciate a visitor now and then. Dick Dunning passed away in January. Sally Mouthaan fell and broke her hip. She is at Mary Free Bed. 616-840-8000 , rm 5108. And just last week, long time friend Ray Lamander passed away
I guess that I’ve ranted long enough. It must be cabin fever.
Everyone be safe. God Bless our troops, deployed and at home.
Larry Reid,
Commander VFW Post 4249
A big THANK YOU!! Goes out to Joanne for filling in for me while I’ve been on second shift and haven’t been able to attend the monthly meetings. Also a big THANK YOU!! Goes out to our crew who has been handling the monthly fish fry in my absence as well!! And we can’t forget all those that helped with our Cornhole Tournament on Feb. 23rd. Thank you!
The Auxiliary will be having their monthly fish fry or chicken nuggets or shrimp, and mushrooms, Friday, March 1st, from 5:00-7:00. These will continue throughout the year on the first Friday of each month.
The Auxiliary will be holding their monthly meeting Monday, March 11th @ 7:00.
Keep an eye on the activities calendar and come and help and participate when you can.
Auxiliary membership dues are due.
Auxiliary membership forms are in the Auxiliary folder at the Post. We’re looking forward to having more people joining the Auxiliary.
The cost of a single year membership is $26 and a life membership is available and the cost varies depending on your age.
We are looking forward to getting new members and working with all of you at the different activities.
Be safe and try to stay warm.
